Treating Severe Migraine with Imitrex
Pain relief from migraine can be burdensome if the pain is so severe. A migraine is a type of headache that is caused by the vasodilatation, or widening, of the walls of the head’s blood vessels or the cerebral arteries. With the widening of the blood vessels, certain nerves around the vessels would be triggered to release certain pain-inducing chemicals. Sometimes the pain can be so severe that it causes the sufferer to experience other signs and symptoms such as vomiting and nausea, pallor and cold-clammy skin. Sometimes, a migraine victim will also develop diarrhea and sensitivity to sounds or light.
Prior to a migraine attack, sufferers report that they develop symptoms which include sleepiness, yawning, depression or even euphoria, easy fatigability, irritability as well as food craving (particularly to sweet or salty foods). These warning or premonitory symptoms inform them that the migraine is about to begin.
Mild migraine relief can easily be treated with over-the-counter (OTC) drugs like acetaminophen, such as Tylenol, or even with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as Motrin or Advil. Therapeutic non-pharmacological treatments such as application with warm and cold compresses while resting in bed can also be beneficial. There is, however, a more advanced prescription relief for severe migraine called Imitrex, whose generic name is sumatriptan. Imitrex was developed to provide fast and effective relief for severe migraines as it acts like the chemical serotonin that binds to receptors in the brain causing blood vessels to constrict or narrow. The narrowing effect thus improves blood circulation and relieves the pain. Imitrex is available in oral tablets or nasal spray and are available as prescriptions from health-care providers.
If you are a migraine sufferer, it is recommended that you keep a small diary of your migraine attacks and take note of the warning or premonitory signs that you experience. This will help you in your discussion with your health care provider in choosing the right medications for you. Migraines are also precipitated to attack if the sufferer is stressed, has smelled strong odors, has taken in alcohol, chocolate, MSG (monosodium glutamate), aged cheese, coffee or products containing caffeine, inhaled cigarette smoke, and viewed flickering bright lights. Some women who also experience migraines during their menstruations are said to have “menstrual migraine” due to the declining levels of the hormone, estrogen. Furthermore, those women who are taking contraceptive pills are said to develop the migraines on days when they are not taking in the estrogen pill.
Prior to taking in any drug for your migraine or if you are suffering from migraine and is in need of immediate medical assistance, please consult your health care provider to further discuss possible options regarding your treatment. Studies are continually being conducted regarding migraine and its treatment, so ask your doctors about it.
