How Imitrex Works and Its Use
Generic Name: sumatriptan succinate
FDA Approval: December 1992
How It Works
Imitrex tablet forms can be taken in orally. Its generic form is Sumatriptan from a class of selective serotonin receptor agonists or a family of drugs called triptans. Sumatriptan acts on the brain like the chemical neurotransmitter serotonin and binds with the serotonin receptors. Right after taking in the drug, it is metabolized in the liver and then delivered to the bloodstream. It then creates a vasoconstricting effect while possibly blocking other neural pathways in the brain.
This drug is indicated for treatment of adults suffering from moderate to severe forms of migraine headaches and cluster headaches along with its associated symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light/sound and sometimes, diarrhea. Migraine headaches may be with or without aura.
